About

Before I got into recruitment, I worked in hospitality, and my favourite part was always the relationships. Having a regular's order ready by the time they reached the counter, working with suppliers on new products, and bringing someone new on and watching them find their place in the team. I didn't realise it at the time, but I was already doing the work I'd end up building a career around - just with coffee and beer instead of candidates and clients.

I started Scion Search because I wanted to do things on my own terms. When someone comes to me with a goal, I want to understand where they are now, where they've come from, and what a successful future looks like. From there, we can discuss how to get there.

The name is a nod to my own - Jasmine Rose. It's always been a little too floral for my liking, so I went looking for something with a horticultural connection that felt less obvious. A scion is a new shoot grafted onto an existing plant to strengthen it and help it grow. A well-placed hire does the same for a growing business. The right opportunity can do the same for a career.

The virtual interview starter kit

A handful of pre-checks - as obvious as they may feel - might just be the thing that puts you one step ahead. Because it doesn't happen often, but when it does, it leaves an impression.

Maybe the greatest gift Covid gave us was the move towards a more hybrid-friendly workplace. With that, naturally, came the new first step in a modern day hiring process... the virtual interview.

Everyone appreciates that finding time in your day - likely around an existing job - isn't always easy. Of course sitting at a well-lit desk with your laptop is ideal, but if that can't be the case, a handful of pre-checks in your toolkit - as obvious as they may feel - might just be the thing that helps you do your best with what you have.

It doesn't happen often, but when it does it leaves an impression. A candidate joining with nothing but a nose filling the screen, five minutes of "can you hear me now?" before we even get started, or a background that raises more questions than the interview itself. Not automatic dealbreakers, but not nothing either - and all entirely avoidable.

Check you have the right software downloaded ahead of time when you get sent a link - Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, whatever it is - get it
Set your laptop or phone up somewhere still. A non-distracting background helps - blur is your friend. If you're in a car, as long as you're stationary, you're winning - interviewing on the go is a different story. Stop the car, start the interview
Join with camera and microphone permissions already allowed
Business on top, party down below - as lovely as it is to WFH in comfort, a blazer is all you need to interview in your Peter Alexanders. Nobody has to know
Tell the people in your house - we've all seen the viral news anchor with his children and nanny bursting into the room mid-broadcast. Don't let that be you
Sort your lighting. Sitting with your back to an open window will leave you as nothing but a silhouette. Face the light instead - a lamp in front of you or turning towards a window is a game changer
Have a backup plan. Technology isn't perfect and being prepared is no guarantee of smooth sailing. Use the chat function if your connection gets shaky - don't spend ten minutes in the lip-reading olympics. Message and offer a solution. "Stay on, I'll reboot" or "what's your number, I'll call instead." Take charge, don't panic

Virtual interviews are genuinely trickier than people give them credit for. Looking at someone on a screen means eyes always appear slightly averted - it's just how video works. Staring straight into the camera to compensate can come across as oddly intense, and in an AI-conscious world, people notice. There's no perfect fix, but being aware of it helps.

Start on the front foot. Preparation is key.

And if you're already in a hybrid setup - interviewing from home or jumping on from wherever you can - remember that for a commercial role, you will be the face of your prospective new employer. A dishevelled bed in the background or joining with nothing but a talking eyebrow visible is a risk they may not be willing to take. It's also a very easy one to avoid.
